Great Family Ski Vacation!
Our family (Americans) stayed at the Club Med St. Moritz over the week of New Year's 2025. The location is excellent and the staff is first rate. I hesitate writing this review because I selfishly don't want to reveal this hidden gem, but I feel that I owe it to the Club Med organization (and the staff at St. Moritz, in particular) to announce to the world that this is a first-rate resort for ANY family ski vacation.
Location: The resort is a very short walk (~5 mins) to the gondola (it is not a true "ski in, ski out", but it is as close as one can get). That being said, Club Med offers shuttle buses to the lift for those who do not want to make the walk. The center of St. Moritz is walkable from the resort - my wife does not enjoy skiing, but she loved the beauty, shopping, and sights that St. Moritz has to offer. The city is amazing, and it is the perfect location if some members of your family are not keen on skiing (this is an issue with my family, and my love of skiing requires that we only ski in locations where there are many non-ski activities). There is a Kiosk (think 7/11), COOP (supermarket), pharmacy, sporting goods store, etc., all within a very short walk from the resort.
Skiing: We have skied all over the U.S., and this was our first foray into the Alps. St. Moritz has a lower elevation than the premier U.S. ski resorts, and nobody in our family had any difficulty acclimating to the altitude (as compared to places like Aspen, Vail, Beaver Creak, Breckenridge, etc, where it takes me a day or two to acclimate). I skied a full day on day one and never felt winded. Also, the Alps are more stunning and beautiful than any location I have skied in the U.S. The ski instructors are energetic, fun and very helpful. Whether you are skiing for the first time or are seasoned pro, there is something for everyone. (Note: I recommend you sign up for a ski group (based on level of experience) upon arrival. You are not required to ski with the group everyday, but is a great way to meet fellow skiers and work with a professional ski instructor).
Family: The Club Med app allows you to enter the shoe size, height and weight and they equip your ski locker with all of the equip before you arrive. Everything fit great and the equipment was excellent for rentals. There is a ski fitter on site if something doesn't fit or feel right, but we did not have that problem.
Our children really enjoyed skiing and engaging with their peers, who traveled from all over the world (but primarily France, Germany, UK and other parts of Europe). As a parent, I was very pleased that my children connected with peers from other parts of the world. The resort has lots of activities outside of skiing, including a family show, an indoor pool, sauna, ping pong, board and card games, etc.
Food: This is an all-inclusive resort (including food and drinks (including beer, wine and spirits). The food is very good and there are so many options that there is something for everyone. The pizza is excellent for those who are not so adventurous. Club Med also has restaurants/warming huts on the two main mountains (Corviglia/St. Moritz and Corvatsch) - but you must obtain a lunch ticket from the front desk. The bartenders are great and eager to make whatever drink you wish. Club Med also provides snacks throughout the day - there is never a moment that we felt hungry and had to search for food outside of the resort.
Accommodations: The rooms are very clean, albeit dated (the pictures are 100% accurate) - think more "ski cabin" and less "Ritz Carlton." If you want a "luxury" hotel room, this is not the place for you. That being said, we spent very little time in the rooms and slept soundly every night (the beds are very comfortable, especially after a long day of skiing).
Club Med Experience: If you are American (as we are), they Club Med experience can feel overwhelming at first. You just have to relax, yet your guard down, and give yourself to the joys that Club Med is offering - these include nightly events and shows, music, and letting go of your inhibitions (the open, fully-stocked bar helps). You will not regret it, even if you feel self-conscious at first. Your children will have a blast and be exhausted every night. Parents can find as much (or as little) time to themselves as they would like. Each member of our family had a wonderful time and we are more connected as a result (imagine days and days without your children begging for more screen time!)
Helpful Information for Americans: Everyone on staff speaks English (some less well than others), but we never found the language barrier to be insurmountable. The Club Med staff works very hard to understand your needs/requests and attend to them. We booked travel through Club Med and it worked out perfectly - they pick you up and return you to the airport (Zurich, in our case). Travel went off without a hitch. To our delight, we made friends with other guests from all over the world, and it was wonderful for our children to engage with peers of all different nationalities.
10/10 would recommend.
